The more things change…

Dear Readers, Sometimes, the headlines don’t seem to change, especially in the title industry. As you’ll see in this issue, despite the coronavirus pandemic, the earnings momentum for title companies and underwriters seems to continue unabated. This issue contains detailed reports of the thirdquarter earnings of Stewart, Fidelity, First American and Realogy. All have benefitted from low interest rates which have spurred a deluge of refinances, for sure. But it would be overly simplistic to attribute all the momentum to low interest rates. Many companies in our space have embraced technology driven efficiencies which constantly improve the closing process and [...]

Appraisers ‘voice’ many concerns in 10th annual survey

Dear Readers, With the arrival of the 2020 edition of “Voice of the Appraiser,” Valuation Review reached a milestone with its 10th publication of this special report. And with the COVID-19 pandemic drastically changing the way appraisers do their business, we were anxiously awaiting opinions from our respondents as to how they were surviving with so many restrictions. Appraisers shared thoughts that reflected the virus not bringing just change but an anxiety in the profession. But through this year’s survey, in addition to the many appraisers, businesses and organizations we’ve interviewed regarding COVID-19, a resiliency came about that has, perhaps, [...]

Elections have home-location consequences

Dear Readers, It’s said that elections have consequences. Who knew they may impact the location of my next home? According to a survey by Redfin, 42 percent of U.S. residents said they would be hesitant to move to an area where most people have political views different from their own. Twenty-eight percent of survey respondents said they would be hesitant to move to a place where most people are of a different race, ethnicity or religion. The latter result falls under the “what else is new category.” We’ve always been more of a segmented society than we have been a [...]

The pandemic’s gender attack

Dear Readers, A recent analysis by Zillow indicated women are more likely than men to be unemployed, renters and caregivers during the coronavirus pandemic, increasing their risk of becoming severely cost-burdened by housing. No surprise there. The COVID-19 pandemic, it seems, has been a major setback for women. The coronavirus pandemic has interrupted the narrowing of the gender gap, pushing women backward in housing and employment. According to Zillow, year-over-year unemployment claims are 10 times higher for women during this pandemic than what men experienced in the Great Recession. “Direct rental assistance and extending unemployment assistance could help women cover [...]

Being thankful is about appreciating what you have

Dear Readers, A change in our print edition schedule caused me to wait until after Thanksgiving to send out my annual holiday “Editor’s Note.” I offer you these sentiments during what has truly been difficult times for so many individuals, both personally and professionally. A few days ago, we all gathered at the Thanksgiving dinner table enjoying valuable time and special moments with family, loved ones and friends, while satisfying all of our hunger needs with the consumption of traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and of course, a piece of holiday pie. Sadly, though, for many, the opportunity to enjoy [...]

The CFPB had a busy month!

Dear Readers, The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) had a busy month. First, they released the five-year assessment on the impact TRID has had on consumers, businesses and the market. Then, they issued a policy statement on exceptional circumstances that allow for terminating an administrative consent order early. Next, they published a set of Frequently Asked Questions about RESPA Section 8 compliance in general, gifts and promotional activities under RESPA and marketing services agreements (MSAs). CFPB Director Kathy Kraninger also made a surprise announcement at the MBA Annual Conference that the bureau was extending the GSE patch. But the pièce [...]

It’s back on the virtual conference road for appraisers

Dear Readers, In our new world of precautious measures to ensure health and safety from the COVID-19 coronavirus, we find ourselves still preparing for the yearly conferences we eagerly look forward to attend. But the traditional planning steps have obviously changed. Instead of booking flights, making hotel reservations, packing bags and heading out to the airport to board planes taking us to our intended destinations, we now simply wake up in our own beds, put on the coffee and go to our laptops to login where informative sessions and networking opportunities are just a mouse click away. For its second [...]

Rising tide lifting all home prices

Dear Readers, It may be bad news that our country is as politically divided as ever. However, where those groups of different political views congregate has had little impact on rising home prices. According to Redfin, for the week ending Sept. 6, the median home price in blue counties nationwide rose 13.1 percent from a year earlier to $346,000. The median home price jumped 11.5 percent to $259,500 in swing counties and increased 10.6 percent to $209,000 in red counties. “Homeowners in counties of all colors — blue, red and purple — are benefiting from a strong housing market even [...]

Steering PPP into the right hands

Dear Readers, According to the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), there’s a possibility that billions of dollars might have been diverted to fraud, waste and abuse. Surprise. Surprise. The committee’s analysis identified 10,856 loans in which the borrower received multiple PPP loans, for a total of more than $1 billion in outstanding loans. The analysis was based on detailed data provided by the Treasury Department and the Small Business Administration (SBA). In addition to double dippers, the committee found 613 PPP loans, amounting to $96.3 million, provided to borrowers who are ineligible to [...]
