Dear Readers,

With the arrival of the 2020 edition of “Voice of the Appraiser,” Valuation Review
reached a milestone with its 10th publication of this special report. And with the
COVID-19 pandemic drastically changing the way appraisers do their business,
we were anxiously awaiting opinions from our respondents as to how they were
surviving with so many restrictions.

Appraisers shared thoughts that reflected the virus not bringing just change but an
anxiety in the profession. But through this year’s survey, in addition to the many
appraisers, businesses and organizations we’ve interviewed regarding COVID-19,
a resiliency came about that has, perhaps, brought an enthusiasm to one’s job and a
spring to their step.

Working together has proven to be a true recipe for success, as well as a surefire
method to keep one’s professional doors open. Still, appraisers dealing with
inspecting properties from afar, are working not just from a compliant standpoint,
but a health and safety comfort zone, as well.

We’ll give you a few “teases” as to what you can find when you go to

www.valuationreview.com to get information as to how you can obtain your copy of
the 2020 Voice of the Appraiser. Our respondents weighed in on how COVID-19
was affecting their business. The survey showed more than half of the appraisers
responding to that question said pandemic restrictions have not changed their
business, while less than one quarter said the new guidelines were not helping their
business.

There were those that said they do site visits and go through buildings, just not
housing and rely on interior pictures sent by the owner. One appraiser indicated
his business is “up,” and not because of the flexibilities offered. Another appraiser
said there is more business but not because of the pandemic; rather, it is because of
favorable lending rates and aggressive bank lending.

Overall, close to half of those responding in the 2020 survey said “okay,” pertaining
to how they feel about their business currently. Such a lukewarm feeling was also
reflected by appraisers in last year’s survey. Given the pandemic environment, the
fact that many still have some optimistic views about the appraisal profession
should be taken as a good sign. As to the days that lie ahead, only time will tell as
all professions hope an attitude of “business as usual” will soon return.

Please keep me informed about appraisal topics of interest to you. As always, we
are here to help you and your business. Stay healthy and safe!

Your valued editor,
Mike Holzheimer
