According to nominator Tom Inserra of Zaio, Vincent has also devoted a lot of time and energy to improving the appraisal profession as a whole. “Doug is an active member of the Industry Advisory Council for the Appraisal Foundation, spoke at the Foundations recent fraud conference in Washington D.C., served as a volunteer on the Bloomington, Minn., Board of Appeal and Equalization and is a state certified instructor for appraisal licensing and continuing appraisal education in Texas. In his spare time, he also served as a volunteer firefighter for Bloomington for four years and has coached youth baseball and basketball for five years.” Why did you become an appraiser? After graduating from high school at a younger age than most, I enrolled in flight school with aspirations of becoming a pilot. However, I continued to grow that year, reaching 6'6”, which is beyond certain height restrictions for most pilot opportunities during that time period. I continued to fly as an avocation rather than as a vocation, and while doing so, and working several jobs, the only local college coursework that fit my schedule was a real estate appraisal and real estate licensing class. It was during a real estate boom, and I was appraising within weeks of completing the class — before I even turned 18 — and never looked backed! I went on to get my degree in finance with a real estate concentration, while concurrently working as an independent appraiser. What about your job gives you the most satisfaction? Being able to actively participate in transforming the industry!

Ability to communicate effectively, and adapt to change. Who is the most inspiring speaker you have ever heard at a conference?
Rudy Ruettiger. He is known for the movie "Rudy" which is about him finally playing in a Notre Dame football game as a walk-on. His message is one of believing, never giving up, always giving it your all, and overcoming the odds.
If you could have lunch with any person living or historical, who would it be and why? I would have lunch with God, because I have a list of questions for her. What is something unique about you that not many people know about? When I was in college, I dated John Cougar Mellencamp’s daughter What is your favorite book or movie? One of my favorite books is "Our Iceberg is Melting", by John Kotter. It is an easy read about complicated corporate issues regarding change and vision. One of my favorite movies is "No Way Out" with Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman, filmed in the ’80's. It had great twists and an unpredictable ending. What are you listening to right now on your Ipod/CD player/Radio? A compilation of meaningful love songs my wife made for me as an anniversary gift. I also enjoy soft rock or classical music on the radio, and a CD mix of Frank Sinatra, the Eagles, Harry Chapin and John Denver. What do you do to relax? Play games with my kids; or have a cup of decaf coffee while reading a magazine or newspaper; or snuggle with my wife while watching a movie. What’s the most fulfilling thing you have been involved in within your community and why? It has been very fulfilling to observe all the kids grow and develop and learn fundamentals, respect, and teamwork while coaching the youth sports my kids participated in, though the most fulfilling may have been the years I spent as a volunteer firefighter, due to the protection this provided to the community, the lives saved, and the camaraderie and friendships developed among fellow firefighters. I was also able to enhance many skills that have fostered my professional career, such as loyalty, integrity, discipline and focus. Return to Top View Winners:
