Name: Daniel (Dan) Miller
Age: 36
Title: CEO
Organization: RightNow

Dan Miller started his title insurance career at North American Title in 1989, after working as loan officer since 1987. His steady rise in the organization paralleled the firm's growth as it became the largest independently held title insurance agency in the nation, prior to its acquisition by Lennar Builder Services. Dan Miller founded RightNow in 1997, a performance consulting company that partners with individuals and organizations in the real estate-related industry.

Dan is a published author and keynote speaker, having delivered speeches on the subjects of sales, sales management and leadership at more than 150 real estate industry events nationwide.

“Since the inception of RightNow, Dan has also made a commitment to giving back to the communities in which we serve,” said nominator Kirsten Wanket, also with RightNow. “A continuous supporter of the Contra Costa Search and Rescue Explorer program, Dan and RightNow pledged their support for the American Red Cross following Hurricane Katrina as well as participating locally in Habitat for Humanity.”

What challenge really jazzes you?

I have spent the past 10 years completely devoted to the challenge of elevating the vision, activity and results of title agents and underwriters in order to help them provide additional value to customers. I still consider this a work in progress although it is the entire reason I’m in business…to help the title business serve the changing needs of customers and markets.

What is the best advice you could give?

Ask you clients what they want. Amplify and accelerate your internal leadership by giving your associates the ability to make decisions and take action. Find and retain entrepreneurs, not bureaucrats. Set goals and work hard. Have fun!

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

I feel thankful that our company has evolved to serve many high level title and mortgage company leaders whom we greatly respect and hope that we have somehow altered the course of their leadership velocity. The fact that some of those people have confirmed our role in their success is incredibly gratifying.

What has been the strangest thing that ever happened to you on your job or the most unusual assignment you ever had?

My first job in the industry was to sell a brand new branch which was struggling and was managed by a woman with a bit of a cocaine issue. Add my complete inexperience, a terrible real estate market, and a location which the company was considering shutting down and the picture is complete.

To what do you attribute your success?

Focused diligence, great associates, relationships with fantastically enthusiastic people, a few God-given talents, a little luck, and a whole lot of passion for excellence.

If you could have lunch with any person living or historical, who would it be and why?

(Dead) Mother Teresa. Her complete selflessness and relentless commitment to her beliefs and convictions are hard to fathom. (Living) Warren Buffett. I know it’s trite but his incredibly enduring financial wisdom seems hard to pass up. Not to mention his sense of humor and uncannily accurate system of investment analysis.

What is something unique about you that not many people know about?

I hold a black belt (Kuk Sool Won) and speak Spanish fairly passably.

What are you listening to right now on your iPod?

I just got James Brown’s “Star Time” box set (incredible) and always have my Miles Davis collection close at hand. My wife points out that I have more CDs than most record stores. Today on an airplane I listened to Robert Johnson, Phoebe Snow, Beethoven’s Late String Quartets, Delbert McClinton and Audioslave’s latest. One could say that I have a bit of a schizophrenic set of musical interests.

What do you do to relax?

Run and record/play music. Since my amplifiers were too ugly and my guitar acquisition habit a bit out of control, my wife “kicked me out” - I had to build a music studio detached from the house. Lots of fun.

What’s the most fulfilling thing you have been involved in within your community and why?

Undoubtedly our commitment to supporting the arts, both financially and physically. We have been involved with Berkeley Repertory Theater for many years and I will continue to donate time, money and energy towards bringing music and arts programs back into California schools in some meaningful way. I am thankful for the excellent music programs in Texas which awakened my demented adolescent mind to artists other than what was popular at the time and hope that our public schools can continue to support young students in finding the gift of music in their lives for many years to come. I have recently been exploring how we can bring entrepreneurial skills to disadvantage teens and have set my sights on this area as a philanthropic goal for 2007/8. I’ll let you know how it all progresses, I’m very excited about the potential to contribute in this area!
